Nampale

Saturday, August 28, 2010

After an over-night sail from Sorong we arrived at Nampale, a small group of islands with wide rivers between them, a crocodile country.
The water was crystal clear and full of fish. Alon went spear fishing with Dion and latch and together they all caught 6 pretty big fish! 6 of them were caught by Dion...

There was a light-house on the island and in the afternoon Alon went to climb up it. The view was just redicioulosely amazing.
The next morning, before sunrise, he went up there again with Latch and Dion, to get some sunrise views...

One of Siara's dinasours. The real reason why they all died...The light-house keeper's residence. Not a bad spot...

Sorong

On the way to Sorong John ran out of smokes... Coming to the rescue, Alon took a piece of wood out of the kitchen's furniture and curved John a beautiful pipe. A true piece of art...
Smoking the pipe didn't prove to be such a great experience, but desperate times call for desperate measures...

We finally arrived at Sorong, the last major town before leaving west Papua and sailing towards Sulawesi. Sorong was great fun. Although it was a bit too dirty to John's taste...

We had dinners every evening in a different restaurant, with the menu and dishes exactly the same in every place. We found a big flash shopping mall and went there for ice creams everyday. There's a huge market in Sorong and just getting lost there for a day is great fun.

John wasn't handsome enough to model for his own pipe, so Alon had to do it...

The pipe. A fashion accesory more than anything...
Green bread. Tastier, better looking, longer shelf life. Why would you ever choose white?

Korido

To break up the trip from Biak to Sorong, we stopped in Korido on the way. Wise move.

We discovered a lazy little village with a massive wharf, for some obscure reason, flat calm water and a fresh water stream were the locals wash and do their laundry. So we washed and did our laundry...

Still a big christian influence here, still huba-luba country...

Biak

The city of Biak was a good place to stop and rest for a bit, refuel and fill our water tanks up. We met some good fishermen who helped us a lot with the fuel.
We met up with Unicorn and Byamee in Biak and we all had a couple of lazy days in town, walking through the markets and streets of Biak.

We hired a taxi driver for a day to go and see a cave where the Japanese soldiers were hiding during the second world war. Quite impressive, but we mainly just enjoyed the day out all together, with the kids running around and all...

Nusi

Thursday, August 12, 2010

From Jayapura, we kept on truckinig, stopping at some small islands and bays on the way. We found some spots with fresh water springs which were really nice, had baths and did our washings in them...

One of these spots was Nusi, a beautiful lagoon which we just happened to take the camera with us ashore so there's something to show... Taking photos was always Amy's department, and now that she's gone we're a bit slack...

Anyway, in Nusi we met up with Antaia after a couple of days on our own. Unicorn and Byamee were a bit behind. We tried our luck with a bit of spear-fishing and visited the lovely village. Althogh the locals are very poor, they keep their village very clean
and tidy, unlike the Huba-lubas of PNG...

The local shop. people were having a snooze in the other room...
